We are delighted to congratulate CSAMES affiliate and former CSAMES Director Waïl S. Hassan on his recent election as second vice president of the Modern Language Association, the largest national scholarly organization in literary studies. Professor Hassan will serve in this role for the next year, automatically becoming vice president the following year, and then president of the MLA starting in January 2027.

Professor Hassan’s election for this leadership role is a recognition of his stellar reputation as a scholar and of his many contributions to the fields of comparative literature, Arabic studies, and postcolonial studies. At CSAMES, we are proud of Professor Hassan’s accomplishments and grateful for all that he has done to promote the study of Arabic literature in the United States and abroad.
