CSAMES: Class Identity in Transition: Egyptian Jews in Egypt and in Israel

Dr Alon works on the social history of “ordinary” people in the Middle East, and specifically on the Egyptian Jewry and now the Shami (Lebanese and Syrian) Jewries in the 20th century. Combining Archival work with oral history, life stories and testimonials my work gleans new information and allows a better understanding of modernity, gender and family in these societies and often challenges prevalent stereotypes.
